CSI: Miami follows the investigations of the Miami-Dade Police Department as they uncover the circumstances behind mysterious deaths. To differentiate itself from the other CSI spin-offs, Miami relies on a backdrop of sun-drenched beaches as well as an anthology of popular music which plays out during the course of each episode.

In this instalment, billionaire humanitarian Bill Winston (Robert Merrill) is found dead in his study. Horatio (David Caruso) soon comes to learn that the man's widow is Julia (Elizabeth Berkley) - the nefarious mother of his son Kyle (Evan Ellingson). The team discovers that Julia knew of an annulment Bill was seeking against her on the basis of fraud, making her the main suspect in his death. Meanwhile, Kyle's trial takes place, resulting in a missing witness and a custody tug-of-war.

The Miami team's fearless leader is both the weak and strong point of the show. Each episode Horatio gallivants from crime to crime armed with his best tough-guy impersonations, a superfluity of lame one-liners and his signature calm, monotone dialogue. Yet his character demands attention; possibly it is the very implausibility of the protagonist that makes him so appealing. Take for example the mismatch of him and the stunning Julia - in all respect she's a little out of his league, yet many viewers won't even give it a second thought.
