Editorial Review

Who doesn't love a round of music trivia? Julia Zemiro, host of RocKwiz, isn't shy in admitting she has a competitive streak. But she has a spirited sense of fun that sees her return for the sixth series of the popular panel show.

Zemiro attributes the show's popularity to a craving by the audience to prove their musical knowledge, first triggered by Trivial Pursuit and popularised in pub trivia nights the land over.

“Certainly when it started coming around in pubs and stuff and people wanted to play games again together, and it was never even for a big prize. You're lucky to win a meat tray or $50 voucher for a drink”, says Zemiro. “And I know that (creator) Brian Nankervis, because it was really his baby, always incorporated music questions in his TV warm ups. He's been the best warm up man in Australia.

“And part of that is he's always used music questions and it's a total crowd pleaser because everybody thinks they know something about it, and they do, really.”

RocKwiz returns this Saturday, 30 August with its usually impressive list of guests.

“The first show on Saturday you get Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson, our first husband and wife team. I found out later that they had a bet. The bet is whoever wins has to get up early with the baby the next morning and the other one gets to sleep in.

“People like Shane and Kasey, who can be a bit reclusive come on the show, talk about themselves, flirt across the stage. At one point we challenge them. His area of expertise is her music and her area of expertise is his music. And it's hilarious how much they don't know.”

Ironically, many fans of the show prefer not to know who the guests are.

“The fans don't want to know who's on the show because they want to do the 'Who Am I?' and they want to be surprised.

“But of course SBS says, 'yeah but we want to promote the show.'”

RocKwiz returns 9.20pm Saturday, 30 August on SBS.
