Editorial Review
With a name like Zipp, you'd expect this Northbourne Avenue restaurant and bar to be fast-paced and packed to the gills. In reality the only sardines here are the ones in the kitchen. The place is ambient and stylish, channelling a relaxed dining atmosphere throughout the ground floor of the Saville Park Suites Hotel. And with its soft suede furnishings, smooth and personable service, and decadent menus, it's easy to see why Zipp took away four of the Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence in 2006. The hotel itself has four stars and is one of the most popular resorts within the capital. For the convenience of their guests Zipp is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week, and is able to cater for functions of up to 150 people.
The restaurant's casual dining menu has all the mod Oz favourites, with a few international dishes thrown in for good measure. The more upmarket dining menu shows a far bigger international influence, with dishes such as Peking duck pancakes and Moroccan vegetable hotpot. Chef Oliver Maokhamphieu is a certified Halal chef, so many of the dishes can be modified to suit a variety of tastes and dietary requirements. A mostly Australian wine list offers a selection by the glass, and is - unlike so many hotel restaurants - surprisingly affordable. Don't forget to save room for dessert. At around $9 each, why not get two?
