The Hippo Lounge is gone, replaced by the swankier Vine Bar and Bistro – but the old Hippo remains, long live the Hippo!

Editorial

The old Hippo Lounge upstairs at the Madison Hotel has been transformed into The Vine Bar and Bistro - a tapas and cocktail lounge. However, thankfully they haven't lost the character of the place. Upon entering, you'll be greeted by a very large giant wooden hippo - a fun reminder of that funky, if dated, former identity. The animal prints on the walls have been replaced by a more sophisticated and subdued atmosphere to suit the inner-city professional/hipster crowds.

Right in the heart of the Sydney CBD, the Vine Bar and Bistro is located at the Central Station end of Devonshire Street. Warm chocolate colours and earthy green textures give this new space a warm, welcoming and intimate vibe, with low banquettes and armchairs for lounging upon. There's also a nice outdoor courtyard (heated) for smokers and friends thereof. Classic cocktails are a feature, with boutique beers, some on tap and a decent wine list.

The staff are friendly and open-hearted; this vibe seems to emanate from Danny Koutalis the charismatic owner and chef who brings a home-style, made-with-love, fresh produce-only quality to the food. The menu includes bite-sized tapas for snacking, and mains like Black Angus steak, pasta and salads, and happily changes with the seasons to ensure fresh produce is always used. This is a great place for either long Friday lunches or a quick bite, dinners, and after-work drinks.
