A huge single can be both a blessing and a curse. Vanessa Amorosi learnt that the hard way with Absolutely Everybody. Released in ‘99, it was a huge success both locally and on the international charts. Not only did it reach the Top 10 in Australia, it spent a record six months in the national charts. It repeated that success in the UK and Europe, topping the charts in several countries and shipping millions of copies. The subsequent album (The Power)went straight to the top of the charts and by the time the Sydney Olympic Games rolled around Amorosi was performing live in front of millions at the opening ceremony.
That kind of success is hard to follow up and Amorosi would find herself struggling in the following years. A stint overseas and a couple of follow-up albums failed to produce any significant hits, and stories began to circulate in certain tabloids about Amorosi returning to her day job. Apparently this involved building fences.
Having weathered those lean years, Amorosi burst back into the spotlight in late 2007. Signed to a new record deal, she resurrected her career with an Australian Idol guest appearance. Ever since, she's been virtually unstoppable - topping charts with the singles Kiss Your Mamma and Perfect. With a newly released album currently sitting in the top 10, it looks like Amorosi's fence building days are well and truly over.
