Editorial Review
For a fortnight only (between July 3 and 16), you can catch Madman's Reel Anime 2008 showcase which, incredibly, is a showcase of anime. For reel. Considering how much time there is between drinks of anime at Australian cinemas, those who are parched for some eye-popping, mind-bending, boundary-pushing Tokyo shocks of the animated kind should get in on this round.Featuring four new blasts of anime-zing (see what we did there?) feature films, the Reel Anime mini-festival stars Appleseed: Ex Machina, Batman: Gotham Knight, Vexille and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
To give you an idea of what you're in for, Appleseed: Ex Machina is produced by bullet ballet master John Woo and is based on manga from legendary Shirow Masamune (Ghost in the Shell). Meanwhile, Batman: Gothic Knight (not to be confused with a certain Dark Knight which will soon land) is a different telling of Bruce Wayne's crimefighting origins. Six different directors steer interlocking elements of one complete work, which features the writing talents of David S. Goyer (Batman Begins) and Josh Olson (A History Of Violence).
What's that? Oh, it's the stampede of Australian anime fans rushing out to get tickets.
