Ten Things to do in Canberra

nullImage

Believe it or not, there's heaps to do in Canberra

Who says Canberra is a "boring city with nothing to do"? On the contrary, it's chock-full of beautiful galleries, museums, activities and world-class events. Here are just a few of our favourites (and most are free!)

Explore the Australian War Memorial
A must see for any visitor to the ACT. Chock full of memorabilia, personal stories, displays, a sculpture garden, gallery exhibits, research facilities, and function spaces, the AWM provides more than just education – it offers a unique glimpse into the lives of the soldiers (and families) that endure the conflict of war.
Website

Wander the Australian National Botanic Gardens
If you love flowers and plants, or simply enjoy the calmness of a beautiful garden, then the Australian National Botanic Gardens is a top spot. With native plants from all parts of Australia, unique rock gardens, eucalyptus lawns and a magnificent rainforest, most garden enthusiasts will be in horticulture heaven. Whether you're there on an educational trip, or simply to enjoy a quiet garden picnic, you can't go wrong surrounded by the stunning beauty.
Website

Browse the National Museum
Explore Australian history and culture through numerous exhibits, technology and hands-on activities. Wander the exhibition galleries, restaurants, theatres and a resource centre, or check out permanent exhibitions centred around Land, Nation and People. The temporary exhibition gallery hosts travelling blockbuster exhibitions.
Website

Visit Parliament House
Parliament House is one of Australia's most popular attractions. With free guided tours every half hour, the site offers impressive architecture, a stunning art collection, a great cafe and a beautiful landscape of green lawns and white pillars. In addition, be sure to browse among the 4,000 artworks, ranging from historic portrait to contemporary landscape.
Website

Paddle, Roll or Bike around Lake Burley Griffin
Lake Burley Griffin, or LBG to the locals, is a magnificent setting for most outdoor activities. Whether you ride your bike, rollerblade, or jog around it, you're in for some spectacular and tranquil settings. Canoes and kayaks are another popular way to explore the lake, and - if your legs are willing - give the paddleboats a try.

Hit the National Gallery
Set on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, The National Gallery exhibits collections that highlight the talent of Australian and international artists. There is something for everyone, including a lush sculpture garden, children's exhibits, an extensive gift shop and the gallery's cafes.

I live in Canberra. I can vouch for how stupidly boring it is for a teenage to live in. If you're into museums and art and all that boring stuff, then yeah come to Canberra. But as a capital we are BORING. Worst night life imaginable and there is just nowhere to hang out.

I moved up here from Melbourne about three weeks ago. My first reaction was 'what was I thinking?'. But try to remain positive - Canberra has its charms and its growing on me - very slowly - but it is... People are generally pretty friendly and there is actually quite a bit to do - although it's seriously expensive. It's a very outdoorsy place - so bring your bike and bathers and enjoy getting active. The only things I actively dislike/hate about Canberra are roundabouts and that everyone f*cking tailgates!!! You dare drive 1km/h below the speed limit (yes - in the left lane...) and some Canberra local will be up your ass quicker than George Michael. Seriously guys - learn some god damn patience. Other than that - loving the Botanical Gardens, Lake Burley Griffin's bike path, and close proximity to NSW country towns.

The so-called Nations capital (which is left off any decent list; concerts, footy, beaches, good weather, never rated on tv guides, digital radio) has some wonderful museums & galleries good for weekends and visits, but after work & weekdays is non-existant with the exception of uni kids that drunk they can't scratch, the ACT must have different liquor laws. Great to visit, then keep moving! I've been here 13 months & 2 days.

Why complain bout canberra when it has so much to offer? If you change your perspective (literally) and visit galleries and museums upside down, it kinda looks different and feels like your experiencing it for the first time. If you also harrass the security you can get into some high speed foot chases for that added excitement. And if you don't like galleries and museums there is always me to excite your life. Ur are an insult to civil engineers and city planners, you don't deserve to live an urban environment. It's not about patience. No wonder you're all bored on this site, if this is what you read! There are heaps of things to do in Canberra: Big Splash water park in Jamison, Mountain biking on the International Downhill racecourse, Sailing at the Canberra yacht Club, Bushwalking in Namadgi, Skiing in the Brindabellas, Swimming at Casurina or Uriarra, Batamans's bay is only 2 hours drive away, Horseriding in Weston or Cotter, Go-karting in Hume or Mitchell, Rock climbing in Hume or Mitchell, Laser tag at Zone 3, Paintball in Tuggeranong, Piallago or Michalego, Free wine tasting at all the Winery's in the region,

Still Not Boring
November 29, 2010

Bobsled alpine slide & flying fox at Corin Forest, Demolition Derby in Piallago, Archery in Weston, Pistol & Rifle Shooting in Majura, 4wding in Sutton, Monster Trucks, Crusty Demons, MotoX etc.. perform yearly. BMX at the race track in Fisher, Skate at the internationally acclaimed & awarded Skate parks in each town centre, Roller Derby each month, Canoe Polo each week, picnics by the lake. So, yeah: if all you want to do is sit around moaning & drinking goon, you will be bored. But maybe you want to be.

If you stupid bogons got off your fat asses you might actually find something! There are awesome little rock pools and heaps of stuff to do in Canberra if you get out of your car and walk somewhere. BTW, the capital is supposed to be built for the educated successful international people who are going to visit it and have the brains to enjoy art galleries and musuems. If you want some things to do in Canberra check out the tourism add. Its quite long. Canberra used to be really shitbut its slowly improving. there are heaps of free national parks for you tightasses.

December 08, 2010

Canberra is a great place for working especially in the building sector. Why else would all these tradesman come from other states. There's actually quite alot to do here and a huge number of social clubs you can join. I've been here for 2 years now and at first i thought it was boring but I've grown a new appreciation for it and I've become more active. Yeah the night life isn't that great but life isn't just about getting shitfaced in a club. Get out and do something! If I really want a good weekend in town I pack the car up and drive 2 hours to Sydney it's not far. As for a place to live it's great if you want to be successful. It's quiet not too distracting, people are generally friendly, and it really helps you settle down and focus. Fishing south coast is great too

I am from Sydney, but lived in Canberra for 18 months. I must have been insane to accept a job there. I can honestly say that having lived in many cities around the world (including boring Tucson, Arizona), Canberra is the worst city I have ever been to. Its not Australia. Its boring. The city is dull. The people all walk around in grey suits and ID badges, looking glum. Locals defend the place because they dont know any better. Anyone living there - get out now before you turn into one of them. I am not kidding either. Canberra is just a big fat happy-taker. I am back in Sydney and its like being released from prison.......

canberra is a shocking baron wasteland and if you have a personality and are seeking to enjoy your life i would strongly suggest not come here or advance your life to melbourne or sydney. The night life is woe full to say the least and if you want to have a quiet beer after work then you might want to think again and sit at home and drink milk. it will be more enjoyable. so in summary if you have a personality or like to enjoy life do not come to canberra!!!

As a student who has lived in Europe and America, I thought the move from Sydney to Canberra would be something different and I assumed that Canberra would have the lures of any other national capital. While it does hold benefits of galleries, the replay value of these is very little. The abundance of outdoor activities is expensive and realistically does not cater to the average individual. The main problem is the lack of a cultured night life or music scene. There is not one area I can think to go to where I can sit down and relax with friends after class and enjoy a few beers outside of the uni. The city shut ups at 8pm and this lack of nightlife or social activity leaves little motivation or excitement in the work place or classroom knowing that at night and on the weekends I will be confide to my room planning my next trip back to Sydney

Get busy living ( leave Canberra ) or get busy dieing ( stay in Canberra ). Good place to raise children or grow old and die;anywhere inbetween is a waste of time, unless your a pothead. City full of public/civil servants, lawyers, politicians and anally retentive fools. Lived there last 5 years, and left 3 months ago to Perth. Done more in last couple of months than I ever did in Canberra. Can only go to the War Memorial and Gallery/Museum so many times before you want to kill yourself. Place is so small, if you don't like someone, tough; You'll bump into them in Civic or Manuka within 2 weeks, guaranteed. Avoid like the plague unless you want to die. Or smoke weed.

February 20, 2011

Okay y'all, time to finish this argument! For starters, if you live in one place long enough then you have probably done all the touristy things, but that doesnt mean its boring - it just means you have to be move inventive with how you spend your weekends. Canberra is close to the snow, the surf, Sydney is not far away and nor is Melbourne for that matter. Take the time to go down a different road or walk a different path. Canberra is NOT boring, its a game that you need to keep inventing.

Canberra has some great clubs and sports bars that have live music, trivia, raffles, usually 4 nights a week and can be a great place to relax with friends or meet new people. Also, the tourist attractions (ie, Museums, gallery's, Questacon, war memorial) are constantly getting new exhibitions, there is the old bus depot markets are filled with great food and crafts. There are also community groups where you can meet new people if you're new to town, check the local paper for info.

Wow, what an amazing amount of vitriol! I too listened for 30 years of all the stories of Canberra, boring, sterile, full of public servants wearing cardigans etc etc, to the extent that even though I was brought up in Sydney and frequently went skiing, I had never even been here. That was before I got a job here in IT 20 years ago. I liked Canberra from the first day and continue to like living here. No, it does not have a vibrant night life, but show me any city of 330,000 that has.If you like the outdoors and are sporty, it is a great place to live. Join a bushwalking club, cycle around the lake, come in Autumn, it is just beautiful. I have worked in Sydney, Melbourne and Darwin and have visited every other capital city, this is my favourite city to live in. It is without a doubt the best place to live with your family.I love the 10 minute commute to work, clear air and diverse and liberal workforce. Canberra is not a place to come and party, but it doesn't pretend to be.

Has one person on this page mentioned something that you would actually do anywhere else? no they havent becuase in cannberra its so shit that peoople have to make up shit to make it sound better. oh the war memorial is so exciting, wrong. the night life is ok, wrong. the people are friendly, wrong. the people are so pissed off that they live in the shittest place in australia that they are all rude and selfish.

Well, it's really a matter of perspective. Aside from the fact that 80% of you chumps should be flagged as inappropriate (probably because you're under <16 and srsly all u's do is txt liek crzy all dai; notice that I am using appropriate English here?), many have missed the point. Canberra is nice. It's a pleasant place to live. The great out doors, and lots of space - mental, and physical. If you want to "go to the city" (@Jesus: yes, the George Michael kind - jealous?), Canberra is not the place. If you wish to raise a family, and/or be at peace with yourself and fellow man - Canberra, bring it on. Anyway, Canberra is worth appreciating because it is uniquely Australian. And you sure can't go wrong with that.

Explain the $4.50 coffees, $6-7 pints, overpriced rent, charges to park at the shopping centres, overpriced average restaurants, lack of choice (yes - Canberra has everything but only ONE of everything). There is also crappy internet service, no free-to-air tv on foxtel satellite, overpaid public servants - cant think of many positives (the only positives Canberrans mention are that its a 2 hour drive to the beach (in NSW) or its a 3 hour drive to the snow (in NSW) or its a 3 hour drive to Sydney). Gee- reading all these comments has been very entertaining! I haven't laughed so hard since I moved to Canberra (8 months ago)! The 'defenders' are the funniest because the defense is so limp. Most hilarious was the advice that Canberra is a game- a game that you have to keep reinventing (!!?). But I was also amused by the writer who went to a lot of trouble to list all of Canberra's attractions (probably from the yellow pages) which included Laser tag and go- karting, and then the other writer who encouraged us to join a bushwalking club. They prove the argument against Canberra most effectively. It just makes you want to keep paying it out- you get such a fantastic reaction!! Personally, I would really like to like Canberra but people are so unfriendly. People may be educated, but they're not enlightened- they have no empathy for the newcomer. Perhaps if you Canberrans were genuinely friendly people (like in Melbourne) we would warm to you more.

But please, - get yourselves to the Big Splash in Jamison ("Not Boring's" number one listed attraction!), it's really great............ woo-hoo! We don't need the beach. . .do we?

I know it is not much to do in here, but if u can make some friends may be they can change your boring life.i guess the only two things to make me stay are the people I met n the job I like. What I find fascinating is all the people that live in Canberra but negatively criticise it. If you're so unhappy with Canberra, why don't you leave? Too gutless and scared to try something new I guess. Canberra is a wonderful place to live. It's clean, safe and friendly. I have lived in Sydney and London and there is no point comparing Canberra with any other city. It's completely different in it's own right. For the people that are prepared to do other activities other than drinking, there is plenty to do. The restaurants are great and the scenery is fantastic if you're into the outdoors. I am a public servant and I work hard to ensure that Australia keeps it high standard of living - I'm proud of that and all the people that bag public servants should show some respect and appreciation for what we do.

Canberra is fantasic for people travelling in big groups who can utilize all the things to do like Paintball, Drinking and more Drinking lol. But if your not an overpaid Public Servant then you really can't afford to do all the fun things because you have other obligations. Go Karting your looking at $50, Paintball $100-200 per person, Big Splash - don't bother it's never warm enough to go unless you live in the artic circle. Sailing - done it for years and it is still boring going around and tacking every minute cause your about to hit a rock wall, and going skiing in the Brindabellas, god your in the wrong place because you need to be at Perisher or Thredbo which will cost at least $200 and it's a 6hour return trip. I suppose you could always go up to Telstra Tower and have a good look and then when your finished throw yourself off the edge. Rock climbing sucks, who wants to climb up a wall for no reason?

To those who are ungrateful for what we have in this life time and find it entertaining to criticize cities rather than appreciate what they offer and cater for. Canberra has many attraction that are appreciated by many such as the multicultural events that take place shows that are held around Canberra from other states.the crime is not as bad as other states and a pleasant place to bring up kids, also there is many none profit organization that carry out great work that contribute to the community. If your not happy and ungrateful travel to third world countries and you will return with more realistic outlook in life and appreciate what we have.

Hated Canberra the moment I came here and not much has changed. This is coming from someone who use to live in Albury-Wodonga. I miss those fun and exciting days...... It's actually the people I hate the most. Canberrans are unfriendly to people they don't know, unlike any other place I've been in Oz or overseas for that matter and I've travelled a lot. I've moved away twice but have been pulled back... due to family issues. Now... I've been sucked in by a high paying job... but is it worth selling my sole for...? Best advice for Canberra, join clubs and try to make friends through existing ones. Otherwise there is really good cheap pot here, ah.... but that's a whole nother crowd of no hopers... really.

Canberra is a cool place for anyone who doesn't embrace the "getting drunk every night is the only way to have fun" lifestyle. There are tons of things to do, although you have to hunt them up. Unfortunately, there isn't much in the way of free evening entertainment for teenagers. We used to have a lot of events at the Unis but then the Student Unions were made optional and the students stopped joining them. Being a University city, the youth entertainment is based around the Uni's, and there's no money for it anymore.

I've been in Canberra for seven months now and I'm quite ready to move on. It was fun being in a new city initially, and I did all the touristy stuff I could find, but when I'd done all of that I was left thinking "what am I going to do now?". It's hard to make friends because it is, as people have said before, very cliquey, and when you walk through the city all you see are public service clones. They all look, walk, talk the same way. My boss said to me that everyone becomes accustomed to Canberra snobbery eventually and that's when you'll start to fit in. Until then you'll be the "different" outsider. Time to leave now I think because I certainly don't want to become one of THEM.
