The lure of the orient has long been a theme for many a new bar, and Hippo Lounge bar, in our city's hospitality hub, isn't about to upset the apple cart. Actually, it gives the 'genre' a nod, but sets its own style with Moroccan rugs and suitably low lighting to highlight the earthy colour palette. Being greeted by Buddha at the door, one is ushered into a room of low seaters and tables, giving the entire venue a casual and comfortable feel.
While there may not be a huge range of brewed or fermented drinkables (about a dozen beers, four of which are local, and four each of red and white wines), what the bar lacks in choice it makes up for in cocktails. The rather expansive list of mixed, muddled, smashed and shaken drinks is quite the tome of enjoyment. Classics are given a Hippo Lounge twist - like the cardamon and pineapple daiquiri, with fresh pineapple and Anejo Blanco rum - while new recipes are instantly worshipped as exotic thrills.
Try a Jet Li (a house favourite made with lemon vodka, watermelon liqueur, smashed watermelon and apple and lemon juice) as you sit back and indulge your friends with tales of your travels abroad. Or perhaps you're more partial to a Hippo Smash, with vodka, peach liqueur, strawberries and sparkling wine. Whatever your choice, the drinks are very reasonably priced, so you can always get the next one on the list after you've drained your glass.
Naturally, the same aged spirits and top-shelf liqueurs from across the globe that are used in the many and various cocktails are available to drink on their own. Ask the staff for a recommendation and you can't go wrong.
