Editorial Review

Slipping out of the cold night and into a dry martini has never felt better than at the Julep Lounge. The flocked wallpaper lulls the senses into submission (seriously, it's hypnotic) as the deep sofas tantalise your weary buttocks. As one of the plushest new additions to the Canberra bar scene, Julep ticks all the required boxes to add it to many lists: venues for a first date, divorce drinks (once the paperwork is finalised), birthdays … hell, just about any excuse for a drink, really.

During the week one can find a regular crowd of sophisticates and suits tucking into tasty tapas and downing a glass or three of wine. The cocktails will add a more sophisticated touch to your evening, although you should pack your big boy wallet as prices can climb. Meanwhile, local DJs give the weekends more of a dance feel, playing well-known jazzy house and R&B to keep pulses raised. Not that you'd need any help from the music; this place is simply made for indulgence.

The Julep Lounge is really all you need to know when it comes to fine cocktail lounges in this mighty city. Nominate your designated driver, send the kids to your parents and you've got a night made for the lushest of fun.

Rebecca: I had heard alot about the Julep lounge and thought it sounded like a great place to kick back with good friends and enjoy an end of week drink. However, while I found the decor very tasteful, I was disappointed by the pretentiously long and over priced drinks menu and poor service. The actual lounge is narrow and although I can see what the atmosphere that the Owners were trying to create I feel that it didn't work very well. (05 March 2008)
